Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 40 years. More than 30% of children and teens are overweight and 20% are classified as obese. Most parents wait for their child to grow out of it, encouraging them to be proud of who they are. That is certainly noble in theory, but being overweight increases the risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol levels, and premature heart disease.

It can certainly be a challenge for parents to provide children with opportunities to lead a healthy lifestyle. You never know what they could be stuffing down their mouths in the school cafeteria or at their friend’ house. That is why it is so important to teach proper nutrition in the home. They will not learn about it in school, not even in health class. The more you practice good health at home, the better choices they will make out in the world.

Here are a few weight loss tips to get your children started on the road to good health.

Children Lose Weight Tips #1: Be The Example Yourself

If you are overweight or obese yourself, you are setting a bad example for your children. Be a responsible parent and go on a diet. Yes, YOU! Children often mimic what their parents do, and if you are fat, they will think it is OK to be fat. It is a rare occasion that I see fat children with skinny parents, and vice versa. How often do you see fat kinds with skinny parents, or skinny kids with fat parents? Not too common.

Children Lose Weight Tips #2: Pack Their Lunch For Them

Do not hand over a five dollar bill for your child to purchase a lunch themselves just because you are lazy in the morning. Nine times out of ten they will spend it on junk food because you are not there to tell them no. If you want your children to eat properly, do the most you can. Pack their lunch so they are forced to eat it. If that is all they have, they will suffer through it and come out better in the end.

Children Lose Weight Tips #3: Think Ahead

Kinds want to grow up fast but they do not think of the consequences once getting there without planning. Studies show that if a child remains obese by the age of 10-14, they have nearly an 80% chance of remaining at a dangerously heavy weight through adulthood. Let them know that, especially if it scares you (which it should!). A childs weight is the most important predictor of whether or not the child will become an obese adult. Nearly 65% of obese adolescents will still be obese as adults, even if neither parent is obese.

Children Lose Weight Tips #4: Eat Together

When I was a child, it was a rare occasion that my family ate dinner in separate rooms. Do not let your child heat up a burrito and slam it down in their room in front of their computer or television. It is important to monitor their eating and make sure they are paying attention to the luxury of having dinner, especially if they are trying to lose weight. Eating together as a family is an activity that will help everyone follow a healthier lifestyle.

Children Lose Weight Tips #5: Fix Them A Healthy Breakfast

You know this is the most important meal of the day, so handing over a sugary pop-tart to your child on their way out of the house is extremely counter-productive. And do not even think about stopping off at Starbucks and buying them a fatty latte either. A healthy breakfast at home does not have to be time consuming. I make a soy based protein smoothy every morning that provides me with the best nutrition possible. It takes me literally 2 minutes to make it in the blender.

Children Lose Weight Tips #6: Introduce Healthy Snacking

Children are quite active with school, sports and other extra-curricular activities. It makes sense that they need a boost of energy in between meals. Stock your cupboards and refrigerator with healthy snacks instead of processed trigger foods. Cut fruits and vegetables so they can grab them just as they would a candy bar. Protein bars and soy nuts are a great alternative to cookies and chips. Premix flavored water with green tea to give them natural energy boosts instead of providing high sugar soda and sports drinks they are not healthy.

Helping a child to develop lifelong healthy habits can be rewarding in so many ways. Introducing healthy alternatives into your child’s diet is not rocket science. Try the Children Lose Weight tips listed above to prevent resistance to healthier eating. As a parent, you are responsible for what, when and where your children eat. It is up to you to help your children adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect and analyze the data obtaining from 12 students studying Indonesian in the training program. The results showed that the students were fairly satisfied with the program and the learning was actually occurred. Students conversationally learnt a lot from the program; however, students’ ability in reading skill is very limited. Some negative aspects should be solved in order to produce higher satisfaction and learning quality. Those factors include course content, instruction and the overall course operation.

>>>Introduction

Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service (INCULS) is a department in the faculty of cultural science, Gadjah Mada University. The overall goal of INCULS is to prepare foreign students with Indonesian language and culture through a training course period. Foreign students from developing countries that get scholarship from Indonesian government to pursue master degree in Indonesia have to be trained in INCULS so that they can survive in term of communication in their everyday lives as well as their academic environment. The program was conducted during an eight-month period from September to May 2007. An evaluation was intended to make judgments about the merit, value, or worth of the training program conducted at INCULS. This evaluation study was to find out the reaction of the students participating in the course and to find out if the program was effective and efficient in delivering knowledge to students. It was envisaged that this evaluation study would increase efficiency, effectiveness and good performance in delivery good quality of learning program at INCULS.

Evaluating reaction is the same thing as measuring customer satisfaction (Kirckpatrick, 1998:25). He continued that if training is going to be effective, it is important that trainees react favorably to the training or they will not be motivated to learn. Motivation has been considered a major impact on human behavior (Sprinhall, N.A &Sprinhall R.C, 1987: 463). According to Brophy (1987), motivation to learn is a competence acquired “through general experience but stimulated most directly through modeling, communication of expectations, and direct instruction or socialization by significant others (especially teachers).” The beliefs teachers themselves have about teaching and learning and the nature of the expectations they hold for students also exert a powerful influence (Raffini, 1993:286). As Stipek (1988) notes, “To a very large degree, students expect to learn if their teachers expect them to learn.” School wide goals, policies, and procedures also interact with classroom climate and practices to affirm or alter students’ increasingly complex learning-related attitudes and beliefs. Classroom climate is important. If students experience the classroom as a caring, supportive place where there is a sense of belonging and everyone is valued and respected, they will tend to participate more fully in the process of learning. Effective learning in the classroom depends on the teacher’s ability to maintain the interest that brought students to the course in the first place” (Ericksen, 1978:3). Courses should be instrumentally motivating by being obviously related to preparation for future goals and aspirations (McPartland & Braddock, 2000).

Cognitive theorists view learning as a reorganization of a number of perceptions; this reorganization allows the learner to perceive new relationships, solve new problems, and gain a basic understanding of a subject area (Sprinhall, N.A &Sprinhall R.C, 1987:192). In addition, learning can be defined as the extent to which participants change attitudes, improve knowledge, and/or increase skill as a result of attending the program (Kirkpatrick, 1998:20).

Thus, it can be assumed that positive reactions of students toward a training program tend to help them learn more. Trainees can learn effectively and will be able to apply the knowledge learned efficiently once they have high motivation to learn. It is in the hand of instructors, administrator and school climate that can facilitate the learning process and increase students’ motivation.

>>>Evaluation Method

The first two levels of Kirkpatrick’s (1998) model of evaluation, namely reaction and learning was applied in evaluating the training program. A combination of qualitative and quantitative approach was used to study the population in order to obtain valid and reliable data. Data collection techniques included observation inside and outside class activities, interview, documents and questionnaire. Twelve foreign students from various countries attending the program were the population of this evaluation study.

1.	Reaction: How well did the students like the training course? Each student completed the reaction sheet which was divided into content, instruction and overall course satisfaction. The course content was referred to the clarity of the course objective, the agreement between course objective and lesson assignment, and the well planned, organized and used of time period. The instruction was focused on the knowledgeability of instructors to the subject matter, the teaching methods and techniques employed by instructors, and the understanding and facilitating of the instructors toward students needs. Finally, the overall evaluation of the program was meant to evaluate the whole satisfaction of students to the training program. A five-point scale was used to scale the responses, with 5 being the highest satisfaction and 1 the lowest. The interview was conducted to check the reliability.

2.	Learning: Is there knowledge gained after the training course? Can students use the language learned? All students before getting the training did not know anything about Indonesian language; this means that they had zero knowledge of Indonesian language. To evaluate learning, the students’ test scores were compared to see if there were improvements in vocabulary, reading, grammar, writing, and conversation skills. The observation was made to see if the students used the language learned in public.

>>>Evaluation Results

The evaluation was conducted as planned successfully and the results were communicated as follows:

1.	Reaction

The reaction score to the content, instruction, and overall evaluation was:

Content: 3.29

Instruction: 3.46

Overall: 3.5

The results suggested that the students were fairly satisfied with the program. However, according to the interview, some students revealed that the program was little of important for their future study when they do master degree since they were told they could use English. They perceived that the program was very important for everyday life but not academic. Some students complained that the book was not very attractive and there were no clear objectives in each lesson. Answering to the question if a variety of media was used to help teaching learning process, most students said no and some teachers come to teach without preparation.

2.	Learning

There was absolutely learning occurred in the program. It was known that students had zero knowledge of Indonesian before they came to study. This means that they did not know anything about Indonesian; however, after studying they can communicate Indonesian effectively, they can read some paper and even do some writing for their class. To be sure, mean scores of two tests which were done in the middle and at the end of the course were taken to comparison. The report of the test was obtained from INCULS and the results revealed:

Vocabulary Writing Reading Grammar Conversation Total Mean

Test 1 77.58 83.83 85 72.33 77.75 79.29

Test 2 80.25 84 76.91 72.58 80.83 79.91

Total Gain 2.67 0.17 -8.09 0.25 3.08 0.62

The scores show that there was tremendous improvement of students from 0% (zero knowledge of Indonesian) to 79.29% in the first test and 79.91 in the second test. There was an overall gain of 0.62% at the end of the course; however, if we look at each subject in the first and second test, reading score decreases to 8.09%. This means students’ reading ability is very limited. Conversational score increases 3.08% which is the highest gain among the five subjects and the vocabulary gain score is 2.67% which is the second highest. The observation was made in school campus and public place including market, football pitch…etc, and it amazingly revealed that most of the time students used Indonesian language to communicate among friends. Indonesian students who communicated with the population reported that they understood the communication 90% from various topics in Indonesian. The foreign students further stated that they preferred communicating in Indonesian to reading or writing.

>>>Conclusions and Recommendations

The students conversationally learned a lot from the program. Language training program in INCULS is very important for foreign students since it equips students with the ability to use and understand Indonesian in various contexts and culture. The score of the reaction can always be improved if some aspects are taken into consideration. The content of the course should be improved. The content should be valid, significant, interested, learnable and consistent with social realities, and utility. The course should be separated into two levels. First level is for general language using ability; that is the ability to use Indonesian in everyday life communication. Finally, the language should be focused on each subject that students will be doing in their master program. The objectives of each lesson must be stated clearly. The students will be more motivated to learn if they know real objectives and the benefit of learning. Instructors should plan their lessons well and present them attractively and effectively to the class. High satisfaction and learning quality will be improved if all those mentioned factors are considered. In contrast, if all the negative aspects are not taken into consideration, the learning situation might be worse for the next program.

JIDDU KRISHNAMURTI –“Violence is not merely killing another. It is violence when we use a sharp word, when we make a gesture to brush away a person, when we obey because there is fear. Here are a few ways that can help you excel in your studies.

Be sure that becoming a dentist is what you desire. Dental school is a very rigorous journey not unlike going through medical school. The first year can be a shock. Learning about dentistry is like learning a new language. You must buckle down and focus on adjusting to new vocabulary, terms and theories.

If you’re not sure if you want to become a dentist then there is no point in going through the motions. Adjusting to learning dentistry takes more than superior academic ability. It takes genuine interest.

If you’re rock solid about your decision to become a dentist then the best advice for excelling in dental school is to manage your study time well. This seems like a no-brainer but sometimes the most obvious advice is the one that is easily pushed aside.

Find the most effective ways for you to study. Some people like to block out their time. After classes and before they go to sleep they will spend four or five hours studying. If you have a problem concentrating after two or so hours then change your study habits. Spend an hour each morning on your studies, a couple of hours after lunch, and maybe another two hours in the evening. Find what works for you.

Get involved in extracurricular activities. Dental school is not your whole life. Find time to have a little fun. Spend time with friends or join a volunteer program. This will help balance your life and will actually improve your grades. Spending your whole life studying can start to become stale. You need to be refreshed when you hit the books so go out and have fun. Be sure to eat well and exercise.

Get a tutor if you’re falling behind. Not everyone can be great in all aspects of dental school. There are so many different classes, lectures and lab time that you cannot excel in every one of them. If you need some help in a subject, the smart way to go is finding a tutor. Take control of your grades before it’s too late.

A tutor will help you better grasp the material learned in class and can also provide advice on how to cope with life in dental school. They can tell you the best teachers, the hardest instructors and the easiest ways to study. Take advantage of peer tutors.

Another way to excel in dental school is to prepare well for your Board Exams and Clinical Exam. You will take your first Board Exam after your second year of dental school and in the fourth year you will sit for your second Board Exam as well as your Clinical Exam. These are the most important parts of dental school because passing the exams allows you to graduate and begin practicing dentistry.

Needless to say, you must study well for these exams. They will be a culmination of everything you have learned through your years in dental school. Be sure you feel prepared. Have a good night’s sleep and eat before you take the exams. These exams can last for many hours so gear up for a marathon.

Pretty soon all your hard work will pay off and you can finally practice dentistry or go on into a residency program. The skills you learned to help you excel in dental school are lifelong lessons that can be applied to any facet of your life.

Richard Kirkham B.Sc.

Isometrics is an old often forgotten method of increasing muscular strength. It has several advantages for increasing a martial artist or self-defense practitioner’s striking power as well.

What is Isometrics?

Isometrics may be defined as a muscular contraction in which the amount of work performed is equal to the resistance.

A very basic example of an isometric exercise is pressing your palms together in front of your chest. Caution: because isometrics involves complete muscular contractions people with high blood pressure are at a higher risk for a heart attack during this type of exercise. Always seek the advice of a physician before engaging in any physical activity.

Advantages of Isometric Exercises

No Equipment to Little Equipment is Necessary

Train anywhere you want to when you want to. Even if you’re traveling you’ll find the simple pieces of equipment right there in your hotel room

Isometric Exercises Can be Done Anywhere

Train anywhere you want to when you want to. Even if you’re traveling you’ll find the simple pieces of equipment right there in your hotel room

Isometric Exercises Can be Done Discreetly

Train anywhere you want to when you want to. Even at a meeting isometric exercises can be executed discreetly.

Lack of Muscular Bulk Development

Those of you interested in developing muscular strength without the normal increase in the size of muscular fibers as found with isokinetic and isotonic (force resistant range of motion exercises such as weight lifting) isometrics, possibly do to the lack of motion, is a solution.

Complete Relaxation of Antagonistic Muscle Groups

When any athlete attempts to increase power a relaxation of the opposing muscle groups hindering the attempted action is not only necessary for an increase of power but for a conservation of energy as well.

Do you see what I’m getting at here? Once it becomes a learned reflex (please don’t use the incorrect term muscle memory muscles don’t have memories) to relax opposing muscle groups and a full contraction of agonistic muscle groups is developed as a learned reflex combined with drills to increase speed, power is increased with less energy!

Yes I know a huge statement in the beginning of a dissertation but I wanted to get you as excited as I was when I formed my theories which were later tested and through testimonials proven.

More on My Power Development Theory for Isometrics

The formula for kinetic energy (energy of motion) is 1/2mv^2. That’s half mass times velocity, which is basically speed, squared. You’ll note speed is a more important factor, however since we’re discussing strength in this article how can we work with and increase mass?

Gross Motor-Coordination

Gross motor-coordination is the use of agonistic muscle groups in proper timing in order to increase the ability to and efficiency of work. To be more precise to a martial arts and self-defense point of view coordination of your body to hit harder. You may feel you do this already but let me ask you, can you ever hit hard enough or are you always striving to find ways to hit even harder?

One solution I’ve discovered to increasing gross motor-coordination is by improving stability in order to generate the greatest potential for force in and through a strike. I have never released this information except in my ebook and downloadable video Step by Step Learning Internal Energy Strikes. Obviously with a family to feed I cannot divulge the content of my entire work, but let me get you excited with this bit of information….

Positioning Yourself in a Striking Position and Utilizing Isometric Contractions Will Increase Stability by Improving Form!

YES! Think about what you’re trying to achieve with your stances for striking.

No weight shift in the opposite direction of your strike.

Optimal penetration for greatest injury potential to your attacker to increase your chances of survival.

Isometrics is an exercise in which you can’t compensate lack of stability with speed. For example, plyometrics is a system of exercises in which explosive power is used and developed. This is a great system of exercise of which I also support, but, as in many fast paced speed type of drills it’s very easy to compensate with speed a lack of proper mechanics which would give you even more speed and power when properly developed.

I, along with my readers have noted, by positioning oneself to emulate a strike in a stationary position against a resistance equal to or greater than the muscular effort needed for a complete contraction, proper form for this position is realized especially after fatigue begins setting into the primary striking limb and the body attempts to compensate with agonistic muscle groups for that striking position! In other words proper body mechanics (sorry I know it’s an over-used phrase) is realized and a learned reflex and kinesthetic sense (awareness of the body in space) develops for this more proper position with greater advantageous skeletal positioning.

Are You Thinking Now?

If you are I did my job. If you’re the type of person whose training is slowed down by yabutting everything let me save you the trouble. ALL training exercises are just a part of the whole. Thus I’ll list some of the disadvantages of isometric exercises.

Disadvantages of Isometric Exercises

Lack of Muscular Bulk Development

Yes I know I listed it as an advantage, but some people want the bulk. Those of you interested in developing muscular strength without the normal increase in the size of muscular fibers as found with isokinetic and isotonic (force resistant range of motion exercises such as weight lifting) isometrics, possibly do to the lack of motion, is a solution.

Increased High Blood Pressure during Isometrics

That was the first thing I told you. So check with your doctor before engaging in any physical activity.

Muscular Strength Improves at The Angle of Contraction

Let’s use the pressing hands example again. You’re only improving muscular strength with your hands together. In order to improve muscular strength throughout your entire range of motion you will need to execute the isometric exercises at three different ranges of motion for the exercise.

Lack of Speed Development

Again just a part of the whole. You’ll need to add some speed drills to your repetuare. Those who join my newsletter receive a free speed drills book.

Lack of Dynamic Gross Motor-Coordination Training

Make sure you practice your techniques moving throughout your range of motion as well as your isometrics.

Conclusion

Obviously the disadvantages of isometric exercises are compensated for in my book and video. The advantages of the little used training method are definitely utilized. I firmly believe isometrics is an important part of anyone’s training system with it’s advantages for both strength and stability training.

Successful people have found that the best way to excel in this situation is to break the entire job into manageable pieces. When one tries to do it all at one time, burnout is usually the result. The “piecemail” approach is helpful to keep motivation up.

How do you eat an elephant? The answer is one bite at a time.

In an era where we specialize in instant gratification, often people having a difficult taking on larger projects. Our society is continually moving towards a time where everything is instantaneous. ATM machines allow us to get money on the spot. We can order anything at anytime on the internet. The meteoric rise in fast food sales shows that many people do not wait long even to get their food. These activities all create the mindset where gratification is needed immediately.

The video game era forged an interesting situation. Many are conditioned to receive all the benefits from a particular activity in one sitting. If it takes longer than that, we lose interest. This is evident when it comes to handling different projects. People generally want to finish things in a short period of time. They lack the discipline to spread the work over multiple sessions. A daily regimen is a foreign concept to them.

Exercise is a prime example of how the “I want it now” mindset is taking hold. Whether one is looking to lose weight or gain muscle mass, the concept is the same. Working out regularly 3-4 times per week over the period of 6 months to a year will have a definite impact on your body. If this is mixed in with a healthy diet, the results are increased. However, we seem to encounter people who want to try to disprove this theory. The desire to have it all instantly causes many people to try to take shortcuts. In the end, none of them seem to work.

Establishing a routine to break activities into multiple sessions is a healthy way to progress forward in any endeavor. When confronted with a mammoth activity, individuals tend to put a lot of action in initially. Then, as they burn out on it, the activity begins to fade. Consistency is a worthwhile ideal to strive for. By breaking the project down into a variety of different components, one can keep the enthusiasm up while moving it forward in a steady manner.

I encountered a situation where I had to make a choice similar to this. We needed to submit an article to over 1,000 different locations. Fortunately, we were able to do it online which was saving a great deal of time. Yet the size of the project still required a terrific amount of work. I was confronted with how to best handle this. There were times in the past where I would have spent every waking moment doing as much as I could for the first few days. This always led to the situation where I would get tired of doing it and back off. Thus, I decided to break the project into a daily activity for a month. Over that time period, I submitted to at least 30 locations a day. On the days I was a bit more industrious, 40-50 were done. However, I made sure never to go over 50. I was able to get it all completed in 24 days.

Apply this technique to your life. Consistent activity yields much greater results that a short burst of extremely high productivity. Sales organizations prefer to hire salespeople who produce a steady amount of sales over the superstar who is up and down. It is much easier to plan and build off consistency as opposed to volatility. Similarly, it is easier for you to make drastic jumps in your abilities if you are consistent in what you do. The discipline one has from doing the beneficial things consistently lays the foundation for phenomenal success.

Focusing you attention onto consistent activity will enable you to tackle any project. People often complain that they lack the physical energy to get done all they need to get done. That is because they often burn themselves out handling one major task. The total focus is on that task to the exclusion of all else. Learning a little patience while resisting the desire to gain instant gratification is paramount for high achievement. Each step moves us closer to our pre-determined goal. The extra energy we gain by not burning ourselves out creates more balance in our lives. We are transformed into steady producers.

ZiziWorld Ethical Investment Opportunity & How To Profit The Moral Way

ZiziWorld’s mission, is one that truly surges from inner passion that reflects my yearning desire to touch billion lives. This is a social enterprise that informs, educates, empower individuals and companies to overcome low performance, mental and physical ailments, in order to achieve optimum health, mental happiness, and financial freedom with N.V.L.S.E – self-help coaching system, entitled ‘’The Rapid Dream Goal Achievement System’ and other products such as audios, CDs, booklets, and book series.

All of my materials are researched from from academic research of neuroscience, physics, astrophysics and sports psychology, written in a layman language to touch billion lives. This is an ethical and morally sound investment opportunity to help advance evolution, and better ecosystem in a win-win situation

This is my moral philosophy, rather than investing in money making to maximize wealth for wealth sake, why not invest in well-being to not only empower and enrich the condition of human lives, but also help the economy.

My journey has been devoted to education, to self-development, and how I can make a difference to human live. For me, this has become an endless pursuit. I passionately want to see investments that will contribute to fairer, more sustainable investments, for which, both individuals and the ecosystem is sustained in coherence for the purpose of human evolution.

World economy, their shareholders play an exponentially important role in shaping our collective consciousness – for poorer or richer. As investors, one would pray that the motivation of ethical behaviour is self-interest, because when the motivation for ethical behaviour is self-interest, decision-making is reduced to risk/reward rather than adherence to selfish ethical principles. I believe that your investment is self-help industry create a production orientation in a way that gives some sort of coherence to human lives

Our present mental, physical and spiritual state is the product of yesterday’s investment and the motivation behind it that shaped the way we are heading today, our moral responsibility must be encouraged and investors must use their investment money wisely, creatively to foster further innovations towards mission –related goals, thus creating an enabling environment, promote trust and commitment for a better future”

My main focus in-house research, to perfect my products, is geared to ensure that the pioneering of my first Self-help coaching system that requires a professional recording studio, and state of the art sound system, design, and marketing so that I can assure investors of better investments that will contribute, empower the quality of human conditions, and sustain world economy, while managing risk through market research and viral marketing strategies

I insist that two moral principles must underpin the global investment standards: the motivation for ethical behaviour must be our number one self-interest to reduce risk and increase reward to maintain human dignity, and the continuous care for our environment. These include anyone who come in contact with our vision, our suppliers, investors, customers, employees, local, national, and the wider community around the world. In a nutshell, “in Ziziworld we invest to teach and we coach to success

The Investment opportunity

Importance of Reading, I mean the habit which is quite steadily growing in all civilized countries of using print to gain acquaintance with the great mass of human thought, experience, study and imagination.

This mass of what for the sake of brevity we group under the one word knowledge, has become very great and mounts up with marvelous rapidity. Under oral tradition, when things were handed down by memory and speech only, the sum of knowledge was small. The invention of writing increased this sum very considerably. Reading completes the importance of writing which it deserves. Books are for us only, either written by our ancestors or by someone else. Every book is packed of some wisdom points, some teachings and many more interesting and beneficial things.

Evolution, with its survival of the more fit and the resulting improvement of the species, seems to have ceased to operate on the human race, so far at least as increase of intellectual power is concerned, before history began. We have been at our best for full 200 generations. During this long period we have failed again and again to cope successfully with the evils national success has brought in its train. We have never had to aid us in one of these crises the habit of reading; and here, perhaps, lies our salvation in the next struggle of civilization for eternalness.

But, we now discover that the same invention which brought us the habit of reading has aroused to more active operation an encyclopedic evolution, an accumulation of knowledge, vast beyond all the conceptions of our predecessors.

The increasing value to men in every walk in life of the ability to take from the printed page those facts, arguments, theories and imaginings that can help him in his calling. Professionalism, socialism, the student of the remotest specialty in medicine and all can gather from reading that which will help them to find, to be and to do.

Now, it is of the essence of society’s progress that its units become more efficient each in its way. No one thing can to-day contribute so much to the efficiency of each unit as can the habit of using reading to learn what others have learned.

Other things may contribute somewhat to this efficiency; reading can contribute most. All advocates of education have made that statement the very foundation of their faith. It means that books are the prime tools of learning; that a library is the most important of all laboratories, and that high reading power in our native tongue is the most valuable of all the acquisitions that the schools can give.

Libraries are better than laboratories and book clubs are best than everything. These are most important things which provide us opportunity to read more and more. India Today Book Club is well known for easy availability of books with discounts and gifts items for all of its club members. India Today Book Club is the best way to make learning a fun. You don't have to wait until your baby becomes a toddler before potty training. You can start immediately from birth. Here's how.

The diaper-free movement, also referred to as elimination communication, natural infant hygiene, or infant potty training, is the practice of potty training a baby from infancy rather than waiting until your child is two or three years old to begin. The general theory is that babies have a natural instinct for elimination and do not want to soil themselves. If parents are able to understand the baby’s elimination cues, there is no need to wait until that baby turns two or even three to begin potty training.

The theory of the diaper-free movement believes that the main reason why potty training toddlers can be so difficult is because we have already conditioned our children to pee and poop into their diapers. When potty training a toddler, what we are really attempting to do is put a stop to a habit that we created in the first place. So rather than train your baby to pee and poop into a diaper and then have to un-train him or her again at the age of two or three, why not capitalise on the elimination instinct from birth and save money on diapers?

How Do You Learn a Baby’s Elimination Cues?

There are essentially four ways you can do this, although a combination approach is usually the way to go.

1. Following your baby’s timing patterns and rhythms.

This involves knowing when your baby is most likely to eliminate. Although there will be variation between babies, there are some general patterns you can look out for. For instance:

after waking up (in the morning and after naps)

during or after a feed

frequent and regular periods in the morning

less frequent and regular periods in the afternoon

As you practice keeping your baby diaper-free, you will eventually learn which pattern your baby follows.

2. Reading your baby’s body language and signals.

Before the age of six months (where it is believed that a diapered baby will become conditioned to pee and poop in a diaper), babies naturally show signs of wanting to eliminate. These may be:

squirming or fussing

wearing a look of concentration

ceasing all activity

increasing in activity

stirring or waking from sleep

If you baby has been diaper-free for a while, you will also find that your baby might reach for you so you can take him or her to the potty.

3. Using mother’s (or father’s) intuition.

Some parents will have a natural instinct for knowing when their babies need to eliminate. Even if you don’t have the instinct naturally, you will develop it as you continue to practice natural infant hygiene with your baby. Here are some examples of intuition at work:

a sudden thought wondering if your baby needs to go

just knowing that your baby needs to go

feeling an urge to pee

feeling the sensation of warmth spreading over your lap even though your baby is dry

4. Creating mother’s (or father’s) cues.

To help communication with your baby regarding elimination, you can have a routine “position” and sound associated with each elimination experience. For instance, always holding your baby a certain way over the toilet and making the same cuing sound to tell your baby that it is time to eliminate.

In Summary

The diaper-free movement may seem a little daunting and challenging at the start, especially when you are attempting to read the signs of a baby who hasn’t quite learned to communicate with you. Toddlers who are being potty trained have usually learned words like “potty”, “wet”, and “dry” which is definitely a lot easier to understand. Infants also have smaller bladders and will have to go to the bathroom more regularly. This can present a real challenge for a parent who is always on the go.

That said, the diaper-free movement doesn’t necessarily have to be an all or nothing approach. Some parents have their babies diaper-free at home and diapered when they go out. If that still sounds like too much, then try having your baby diaper-free for just a few hours a day. Once you feel more confident, you can increase the duration.

By: C. Read
Within the story of the last century we see the rise not only of the great Liberal – Darwin – Freud conflict over the question of human nature and human freedom, but we see towering above the masses the crags and peaks of peculiar individuals, our human ancestors and comrades, called leaders, that seemed to stand out against the background, as the catalysts of change. What then constitutes the cellular and molecular makeup of these rare characters ?

Harry Truman, erstwhile President during the later and following stages of the Second World War, stated a definition of a Leader that is pithy and simple; “A Leader is a man who has the ability to get other people to do what they don’t want to do and like it.” This was the man who had on his desk during his presidency “The buck stops here.”, broadcasting to his people and underlings that his desk was where the last court of appeal would rest.

Interestingly Truman was never thought to be much of a Leader before he acceded on the death of FDR to the highest office in the world. Yet his conviction that a Leader must take the ultimate responsibility within a clearly defined organisation and set of goals have led revisionist historians to rank Truman as one of the most influential presidents this century, with the dropping of the atomic bomb and the commencement of the Cold War marking this era as one of the most difficult and messy in the history of modern International Relations.

But the greater point at issue is the seeming dearth of leadership skills in our public officialdom and in society and business at large. Something has gone rotten in the state. As Walter Bennis a scholar respected for leadership studies once commented: “But now, try to name only one larger-than-life Leader, one who could fill the role of FDR, or Ike or De Gaulle, or Churchill.’” Most of our leaders today are decidedly average, and do not promote or lift us or our hopes on the wings of higher purpose and energy. They miss the leadership skills that Bennis and others are dedicated to teaching. The skills that are according to Bennis are so vital for leadership are:

-Judgement and character.

-Persuasive ability to get people to accept the idea.

-Candour.

-Constancy.

-Conceptual skills

-Strongly defined sense of purpose.

-Potent point of view

-Limited number but clearly defined objectives.

-People skills.

Importantly Bennis believes that leaders are not born — but are self made. All the above points are a framework of skills that combine character traits and psychological dispositions. It is a complicated and interesting mixture of these two ‘concepts’ that seems to produce the leaders of human society. First we shall look at the issues of character and use Bennis’ ideas (below in Italics) to provide a framework and then we will look at Churchill and other leaders of this century. For simplicity I have grouped Bennis’ ideas and other concepts of leadership into the following categories;

In time of change and tumult, extraordinary effects are expected from the ordinary human. The modern Christian and secular era which began with the rationality of Descartes, was a keen departure from the more fatalistic, deterministic concerns that had befuddled man since the time of the ancient Greeks. In the philosophy of antiquity, progress did not exist. The human condition was cyclical, in the hands of Gods, and deterministic.

The three fates, picked, pulled and then cut the thread of each life. Pagan rituals, myths of various kinds and then institutionalised religion, bounded the masses into acceptance. However with the coming of the enlightenment and the power of individualism these shackles were thrown off. Progress and equal access to power were demanded by the dull but brute mass. Standards and expectations have progressed and now we have the question of how to achieve an open Liberal order within the framework of human frailty, egoism and banality ? How should, in this culture of equality and ‘me too’ rights, a person lead ?

The evolution of leadership usually matches the evolution of societal development, albeit for some regions of the world at a retarded pace. Different eras will throw up different leadership paradigms. In the mostly militaristic and tribal and primal eras that were in vogue for most of history before the industrial revolution and the spread of technology and democracy, most leadership was rather authoritarian. The authoritarianism could take different guises and forms, and have different points of emphasis, but mainly until about the 19th century, rule was by force, by a small oligarchic elite, and without any real regard for popular expression.

The degree of this atavism would be influenced by the degree of the particular empire, city-state, or tribe’s collective mission, religious worship and strength. But there is very little difference when looking at the attitudes and actions of early Sumerian or Babylonian rulers with those of Rome, the Mayans, the ancient Manchu’s or the Gold Coast Princes, or even those skills demonstrated by Napoleon, Stalin or Mao. But in a world where the Internet runs amok, technology creates new markets and extends the human life each year, and mass communication has rendered a class system an anachronism, some redefinition of the leadership paradigm is required.

In the re-appraisal of leadership during the past century, many experts have concluded that the priority of the Leader is to guide, co-ordinate and empower. Only in this way could he avoid the primitive struggles, revolutions and intrigue that seemingly crippled or destroyed the leaders of history during the more primitive era of human societal development. Not eschewing the principles of power it was deemed that all leaders could achieve control through persuasion in a democratic environment with the inclusion of their constituents.

It can be witnessed in reading history that the most effective leaders are those that have presented a drama that unfolds over time, with a pregnant message and a theme that is dynamic. For those who are revered as leaders they have given or are giving their people the impression that they have, all together, embarked on a journey. Importantly for the followers this journey will in some way resolve the issue of their individual identities and their place in the order of this chaotic universe. As such the strong message and vital theme is linked to the self worth and egoism of the constituents.

Therefore the skills that we have identified – communication, persuasion, and people skills – will be necessary to democratise but at the same time civilise the group mission. Leadership occurs in the human mind (s) of the Leader and followers – especially in the cognitive processes of those that are following. Power must be yoked to cognitive processes and specific messages that can appeal to the needs of the followers, especially the human need to feel included, wanted and respected. In this regard there is no need to guide policies by the latest opinion poll or force complex ideas into sound bites.

Churchill for example exerted influence directly through the stories he communicated to his audience. Einstein was an indirect Leader using the ideas he developed and his treatises to appeal to these basic human yearnings and thus win wide acceptance as a Leader of science. Thus persuasion and communication are extremely important, in fact crucial, for any Leader. When a Leader tells stories to sophisticates it can be complicated, but when the Leader is dealing with a diverse heterogeneous group the story must be sufficiently basic to be understood by the untutored mind.

In the thread of communication the Leader must focus the group on the goal (s) (limited it should be stressed for the sake of clarity), that they will collectively achieve. To realise the goal the Leader must drive for quality, achievement and results. However the Leader must be steeled and resistant and ruthless in dealing with those who demand unwarranted change in the group’s direction or those who demand that every step be performed to perfection. Rebels and those who corrupt the cause must be effectively dealt with, either they are brought into the group as effective participants or they must be ejected. Perfectionism on the other hand is the enemy of effectiveness. An effective plan executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next year.

A true Leader will be able to make, communicate and implement an effective plan. He must really resist those who demand perfection. In my experience these perfectionists are more in love with delay and babble then in achieving something. They are also incapable of taking judicious risks. This is not to deny quality, but elevate results. In this regard, the skill of communication will be vital as the Leader manages the art of improvisation to achieve the stated goal; “Petty minds attempt to accomplish everything; wise men pursue only the most important.” The large goal must be always communicated and present and perfectionism and other obstructions found intolerable.

The sophisticated and untutored mind will believe and subscribe to the achievement of the goal if the story told by the Leader is carried into force by action and determination. The Leader must lead by example and by hard determined work. Importantly a true Leader will have the self discipline and associated skills to not only enjoy quietly the triumphs along the way, but more importantly to maintain calm during a crisis. Patience and knowing when and how to achieve victory are important qualities that the Leader must relate, tell and exemplify.

To satisfy goal attainment we are not only dealing with the skill of convincing others, but we must integrate into the message the skills of intelligence and knowledge. Effective communication without knowing what you are doing or talking about is dangerous. Knowledge, is the foundation of success. Knowledge is the fundamental, strategic, and tactical understanding of the entire process at work, and what the goal(s) should be and how to achieve these goals. To understand what you do and do not know is true knowledge and the type of knowledge a Leader needs to strike the right message, communicate the right signals to the right people at the right time, and get those with the skills he does not possess on the team.

Intelligence

Communication skills are therefore a component of intelligence but what exactly is intelligence ? IQ tests though providing some standard to measure raw, Western based concepts surrounding how we in the West view intelligence, are not accurate indicators of success in life. School achievement is not an indicator and does not provide a direct mathematical correlation to the success people enjoy or do not enjoy in professional and private affairs. Intelligence is in essence a combination of skills and aptitudes over a wide range of areas, with, it appears an applied focus on a particular domain, by a person with perseverance that generates success. Natural genius in some is evident but this genius by itself is not the only variety of intelligence that humans offer and is not even the most important when people discuss intelligence. The hard intelligence – scientific, mathematical, calibrated – is not the same as the soft intelligence of human skills, communication and common sense. Einstein could not remember his phone number, Churchill could not fix a car engine, Bill Gates is celebrated as lacking in human skills; but are any of these people less intelligent in general than the other ? Who knows.

In general we can state that there are some forms of intelligence that an effective Leader should possess. The first of these is technical ability. Technical ability is the application of skills relating to the discipline at hand. The tools, the methods, the programs, and the general knowledge around the subject, constitute technical intelligence. It can be highly mathematical and refined. Even non-scientific, non-industrial or non-technical areas, can be calibrated and quantified and the understanding regarding what constitutes the subject can be considered ‘hard’. To be effective and know what is really going on a Leader needs to be well versed in his technical discipline.

Important in this aspect is the application of innovative thought. The ability to change or add more value to the technical area by using common sense to solve problems or change some technical feature of the topic at hand elevates the prestige of the Leader. Innovation is then another key component of intelligence. Capitalism as a theory is founded upon innovative destruction. Creative chaos breeds challenges, changes and chance. People can then add to their speciality some form of applied innovation to solve some issues or create opportunities. Innovation however is rather difficult to quantify. Some innovations are achieved by sheer dogged courage, others by a combination of sweat and luck, others by circumstance and collaboration across time and people. How are we to measure the creative creatures who are building electronic commerce systems for internet shopping, against the local garage engineer who cheaply and efficiently finds, fixes and tests a novel solution to your car engine’s trouble ?

A Leader must have the technical and innovational skills demanded by his environment or the same skills to create his environment. However, I would submit that this is not enough. A Leader must also understand history and people. This is a completely different interpretation of intelligence, utilising different spheres of the brain and neo-cortex, yet vital for a Leader. I mean not just the history and people of his chosen area of professionalism, but a Leader must have in general an appreciation of history, culture and time.

People follow leaders who can demonstrate a multi-faceted approach and understanding to life and who can show other people the skills and ideals that they aspire to and want to hold. For the leader a general appreciation of history, people and time is indispensable for self–perspective, and to understand his place in the universe. It also forms a part of the group’s mission and vision in the grand sweep of historical progress and civilisational development. A Leader who understands history can elevate the current and mundane to the sublime, through an enthusiastic interpretation of the group’s mission in historical terms. He can also spot trends, repeated occurrences and learn from the past to avoid mistakes. The good Leader recognises that history does indeed have a nasty habit of repetition, albeit in different disguises.

Vision

A true Leader develops an intense determination to achieve his vision. This creates high morale and spirit among the constituents. The Leader will use this power to control the efforts of his followers. The path to command therefore starts with a purpose. The most notable leaders in history have possessed an overarching vision relating to their goal; the philosophy and meaning of achieving the vision; and the ethical doctrine (which can be very much debatable depending on the principles espoused by the leader), supporting the vision. This vision is usually premised upon the skills and traits mentioned already. There has to be some valued added and ‘exciting’ agent at work in marking this person out as a Leader and distancing him from the rest. Usually this agent is catalysed by innovation, resolve and intelligence – all related to a vision that the followers buy into.

This vision should not only be a stated goal – or a hard objective. It has to also be a moral statement or a position that is recognised at the very least as neutral regarding the basic beliefs that underlie all human religious activity – patience, hope, understanding, humility, civilised conduct and co-operation. The vision cannot come into conflict, at least not with people who have some ethical construction – with these basic ideals. This is very true in an integrated world. Despite the many horrors of human history and the swings in the pendulum of human morality, one can point to the gradual emergence of more sophisticated ways of thinking in the areas of morality and civility.

Leaders are also evolving their morale themes — Jean Monnet, Churchill and Gandhi would be examples since they developed in their constituencies a more complex way of thinking; in effect they communicated a vision with a meaning. Many leaders fail the vision test since their stated goals are material and ignore the ethical. As Freud expressed; “the voice of the intellect is a soft one, but it does not rest until it has gained a hearing. Ultimately, after endlessly repeated rebuffs, it succeeds. This is one of the few points in which one may be optimistic about the future of mankind.” The intellect is concerned not only with achievement but also with emotional needs.

People need spiritual as well as material meaning. The vision then has to conform to many different pressures and levels of expectation. It must be pure in ethics, strategies, and philosophy to garner complete and unchanging support from those involved. The handling of this vision and its changing character or adaptation to a changing environment, and in response to comments ‘from below’ is the responsibility of the Leader. The vision may justly be amended if circumstance or comment warrants and as along as it satisfies the material and spiritual demands of the constituents.

If this has been accomplished it becomes the Leader’s responsibility to embrace the duties and obligations that grow from trust and power in doing what is necessary to make the vision happen. The Leader must therefore lead by example, show an overriding concern for the constituents. He must also do the essential things well – be proactive, reduce complexity, and seek improvement – all in the name of achieving the vision. In essence – action: “When the chips are down, the main question is not how you go about meeting your objectives, but whether you succeed in doing so.”(9) . The vision is nice. But without results it becomes hollow. To achieve the vision takes extraordinary energy, discipline and the judicious usage of power.

Power

The attainment and use of power is one of the most interesting investigations that we can undertake. It encompasses the fields of psychology, political relations, philosophy and biology. Yet much about power remains rooted in the primeval nature of man. As with any part of the primate family the human tribe has a pretty well developed organisation of power. In human society there are dominant hierarchies, with dominant males and some dominant females.

These dominant leaders will exhibit certain levels of serotonin, and lower overall levels of stress, demonstrated in higher neurotransmitter activity. Within an organisation it can be observed that when a male’s position changes in the hierarchy so do these psychological markers. As well it can be observed that within these hierarchies there is a proclivity to imitate, and this is unidirectional, with lower primates imitating higher status animals. In the 20th century corporation the above principles are still valid. We call it company culture.

Thus we can state that if a Leader attains power he can expect his subordinates to imitate his movements and attitudes. But how then does the Leader establish this power ? In bygone eras force or hereditary status was enough to mark the primate’s role in the hierarchical league. But today this is hardly sufficient though brainpower replacing strength can be used to elevate one’s position in society. But power is not about the supremacy of muscle or grey matter, it also has to do with capturing the cognitive and emotional impulses and designs of others.

The motive force of much of human history has been the desire of individuals to achieve. To leave a legacy is a basic human need. From Cheops to Imperialists, to graffiti artists at the foot of the Great Wall, to encrypted radio signals scanning the universe and broadcasting our existence, the human seems especially concerned with his role in the order of time. Yet for most of us we must be concerned with daily survival and obtaining necessities and we have little of our energy is left for other purposes. Yet through chance, design or circumstance some of us, driven by imagination, or a combination of extraordinary skills, strive to reach the pinnacle.

Bertrand Russell paints succinctly, this struggle to attain power:

“Of the infinite desires of man, the chief are the desires for power and glory. These are not identical, though closely allied….As a rule, however, the easiest way to obtain glory is to obtain power; this is especially the case as regards men who are active in relation to public events. The desire for glory, therefore, prompts, in the main, the same actions as are prompted by the desire for power, and the two motives may, for most practical purposes, be regarded as one.”

The study of power is vital. Men who love change and glory, utilise and usurp the levers of power. Key components of this journey are the concepts of intelligence, integrity and energy. But like the above, power has many forms. None can be thought of as subordinate to the other. Some weave power through communication (or oratory), some through example, others through sheer hard work, others through knowledge, and yet others by understanding the system and using it to their advantage.

Or perhaps all of the aforementioned are employed. Though the conduits may vary, the result always justifies the means for those who seek to lead. Power is somewhat amorphous and dense. Much as some men’s characters lead them to command, some to follow, with the great majority stuck somewhere in between, so is power utilised by different people, in different ways to attain different results.

At the core of power seekers we have the great self confidence that lies not only on the surface, but penetrates deep into the subconscious. This self confidence necessary to a Leader may be caused or formed in various ways. It may come from childhood experiences, through early familial pressures, educational processes, years spent in independent struggle, support and advise by someone close, or a combination of these and other factors. Indeed the psychological profile of self confidence is one of the great holy grails of those who seek to measure intelligence and success.

From my less scientific and casual observations I have noticed that those people in my life who are truly self-confident have a high degree of honesty, a past in which they really had to struggle to survive and achieve, and the support of someone close who acted as a sounding board and a buttress. Invariably they are open but stubborn in pursuing what they want. Interestingly as well they are optimistic people, optimistic not about the human character but optimistic about eventually achieving their own goals.

In any event these types of personalities and power seekers will inevitably run into other power seekers. If we observe for instance Cromwell, Napoleon, and Lenin, all dominated their respective countries and secured the willing service of able men who were not be nature by submissive. All three had boundless courage and self-confidence, combined with sound judgement. Crowmell and Lenin also happened to be men of profound religious faith believing themselves to be the appointed ministers of a non-human purpose. This faith gave them the courage to carry on when the task seemed lost. Yet they had the technical, human and visioning skills to suppress or direct highly competent and ambitious colleagues.

These men recognised that if one aspires to leadership one must acquire the position of leader, and he must excel in the qualities that confer authority: self-confidence, quick decision making, and skill in deciding upon the right measures are especially sought after by the mass when times become too confusing, threatening or generally incomprehensible.

In the realm of politics or matters of state, issues are deemed by the mass to be too arcane, and have in the representative systems in use in the West, proxied their political interest to elected officials. This allows the toiler to subsist and focus on the immediate world and immediate needs.

Leadership is in a very real sense, the combination of the profane, the fecund and the spiritual.

Look into Winston Churchill and his idea of a good leader. The Internet is a good source of information to discover what Churchill has to say about the concept of leadership and how he was a leader himself.
