Expectations for a child’s behavior depend not only on the society and culture, but also on the child’s developmental stage, and physical and cognitive capabilities, and on the values and beliefs of the family and home. Dealing with child behavior may be difficult, yes, but parents must try to nurture their children so that they will achieve self-control, competence, and self-direction in order to be a productive individual in society.

Undesirable behaviors are those that put the child or others in danger, do not comply with expectations of caregivers or other appropriate adults, and interfere with social interactions and self-discipline. When undesirable behaviors occur, discipline strategies are necessary to reduce or eliminate such behaviors. A good parent must try to understand when, where, and why bad behavior happened. Good parenting starts with behavior analysis.

Another tip is to choose your battles. Keeping the peace is more important than keeping up appearances, and so put your peeves in check before starting a fight with your child.

For some children, time out is an effective tool to use. Time out is a discipline strategy that involves removing positive reinforcement for unacceptable behavior. It is a defined period of time in which the child is removed from activities and social interactions, the goal of which is to interrupt a pattern of negative behavior. The child should be placed in an area that is non-stimulating and safe for a given amount of time.

What is essential in dealing with child behavior is to set clear, reasonable, and developmentally appropriate rules; explain the consequences that the child can expect when the problem behavior occurs; develop consequences that are appropriate to the child’s level of development and sufficient to be considered negative without being unduly harsh; and praise the child when he behaves appropriately.

This is because the treatments are more effective the sooner they are administered. Review the checklist of behaviors to watch for below.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder where the infant, child, or adult has difficulty with social interaction, behaviors different from others of the same age group, and have challenges with communication skills. Some specifics include:

Prefer to play alone Unwilling to share or take turns with others Develop language skills more slowly than peers Lack of verbal communication Repetition of words or phrases Difficulty understanding the body language Inability or desire to listen to people Become upset and angry with change in schedule or routine Unusual organization skills

The above checklist is far from complete, but it will give you somewhere to start your investigation of this neurodevelopmental disorder in your child. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim that 1 in 150 infants are born with autism. And if you have a boy you should know that your boy is four times more likely to have autism over girls. This is a staggering number of children that are affected by this disorder. Every parent should know, at minimum, the basic checklist of infant signs of autism to watch for as early detection of autism is critical. The earlier the detection the earlier the diagnosis and the sooner treatment can be administered. Treatments, not cures, are more effective the sooner they are administered, so every parent should know the symptoms.

The exact cause of autism isn’t known, but the disorder appears to have a strong genetic component. Researchers report if autism is present in one identical twin, there is a 75 percent chance the second twin will also be affected. Parents who have one child with autism have a 2 to 8 percent chance of having another child with the disorder.

Infant brain imaging has shown that some children with autism have bigger brains than children of the same age. This has been show to start in infants at the 12 month age. This is great news as the sooner a diagnosis of autism is reached the more effective the treatments will be at reducing the symptoms.

Believe it or not, dogs can go through similar stages, and we even call it the same thing. They are adolescents and behave as such. They tend to not listen to us, and they act as if we've never taught them a thing. Frustrating though this is, it is absolutely normal and not just your dog being "stubborn". If you're having trouble walking your adolescent dog hopefully this will give you some helpful tips.

First off, she was walking him on her right side. Though we haven’t worked much with his walking when we have it has always been on the left side, so he was obviously a little confused about where he should be. But the main thing I noticed was that although she was walking briskly to tire him out, she wasn’t giving him any feedback. There was very little interaction happening between them. The dog was going to her left side, jumping up at her, and it was as if he had a big bubble over his head saying “look at me, look at me, look at me!!”

The answer, of course, is he needs more mental stimulation. This is an extremely intelligent breed that needs as much, if not more, mental exercise than physical. Please don’t misunderstand, I’m all for physical exercise. However, if that’s all you do you end up with a stupid marathon runner. A well-exercised dog with great stamina and endurance, yet he still doesn’t know anything. So if the physical exercise now takes 1 hour to tire him out, in 6 months you will need 1.5 hrs to tire him out and it will keep increasing from there. If you think about it, what makes you want to take a nap more? An hour on the treadmill or an hour of calculus or physics? Personally, an hour on the treadmill gets me energized, but use my brain like that for an hour & I want to take a nap.

All this stuff about people thinking they can just run the dog or put a heavy back pack on them (without knowing if the dog is physically fit enough to handle it), and thinking that will cure all their problems is ridiculous. Mental exercise, of which training is the most important part, is what tires a dog out the fastest. And at the end of it all the dog will know what you want/need him to know. At the very end of it all you have built a great relationship with your dog. And the relationship is what it’s all about isn’t it?

So, you know it occurred to me that I didn’t mention what we did to help resolve this pup’s boredom during walks. We are going to teach him to touch things with his nose & paw. That way when they see a construction cone, lawn jockey, or other interesting thing on the walk she can ask him to touch it with either or both, his nose or paw. When he wants to sniff a bush we ask him to sit, shake, spin, lie down, something/anything. Then he gets to run over & sniff the area. We tossed a few treats into a grassy area and told him to find it, so he gets to use his nose. On our walk we found a big palm frond he wanted to play with. So we picked it up, asked for a sit and played a quick game of tug o’ war. Asked for a “drop”, then another quick down, spin, shake, and tug again. He had a blast and it really broke up the monotony for both the dog & walker. The walk was much more enjoyable and he was thoroughly exhausted at the end of it!

Applied Behavior Analysis – Is the belief in the idea that people with autism will respond better when a behavior is rewarded, rather than the behavior being ignored altogether.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) begins with an assessment, this is to establish 4 things:

Define the behavioral problem in behavioral terms.

Take a baseline of how often or long the behavioral problem occurs.

Note the antecedents of the behavioral problem.

Note the consequences of the behavioral problem.

Defining the behavioral problem in behavioral terms – Means finding a way to count the amount or time of the occurrence of the behavioral problem whenever it is observed.

For instance, if a parent says a child is aggressive, this is not a behavioral term.

Aggression can not be measured, but, if a parent says a child hits a brother or sister for example, this is a behavioral term; this behavior can be measured, the therapist can see the child hit the brother or sister and count the frequency that the child hits out at the sibling.

The baseline is a representation of the behavioral problem over a relatively short period of time. For example, the number of times the child hit’s a sibling each day or how long the child can stay on a specific task.

Once a baseline has been established a therapist will begin behavioral intervention, and continue to monitor the frequency with which the behavioral problem occurs.

After a reasonable amount of time, the therapist will compare changes in the frequency of the behavioral problem to the baseline to establish if the behavioral intervention is working.

Noting the antecedents of the behavioral problem; This simply means keeping a diary of what happens immediately before the behavioral problem occurs. For instance, if a child is hitting their brother or sister after a parent says “no”; to them for something, then the parent saying “no” is an antecedent.

Noting the consequences of the behavioral problem; Simply means include in your diary what happens to the child as a result of the behavioral problem. The consequence of hitting their brother or sister, so for instance, if the child hits out, after being told “no” and then parent gives in to whatever the child was being told “no” too, then the parent giving in is the consequence.

So once this groundwork has been done the next step would be for the therapist to set up a behavioral intervention.

When we think of behavior we naturally think of aggressive behaviors or (behavioral excesses).

But the not so obvious are the behavioral deficits, Some examples of behavioral deficits are: attention deficits; not following directions; lacking the appropriate age- skills, such as being toilet trained; being unable to dress and feed appropriate to their age; behaviors, no play skills, unable to pretend or imitate; motivation problems; shyness delayed speech or no speech, poor use of language; no co-operative play skills, or turn taking; depression; hypo activity; and withdrawal.

So generally speaking, if there is a behavioral excess, then the idea would be to choose a behavioral intervention to decrease it.

If there is a behavioral deficit, the idea would be to choose a behavioral intervention to increase it.

So for example if a child is crying to get what he or she wants then the appropriate ABA program would be to only give the child what he or she wants when they use the appropriate language or other method discussed when the ABA is set up.

Finally once the ABA program has been deemed a success, the therapist will want to make sure the changes in behavior are permanent. And that any re-enforcers that were used to establish the behavior are slowly withdrawn, so that the behavior can continue without re-enforcer, for example sweets that may have been given to re-enforce the learnt behavior.

Teaching social skills to autistic children can be tough, using autism social stories can make this a whole lot easier.
Some dogs will chase each other all over the street, sniff each other’s bottoms, and then do a few nasty things that may or may not result in a litter of pups. Other dogs will growl at other dogs, bare their teeth, and then snap at other dogs. The latter behavior can be disconcerting to pet owners who are fond of walking their dogs, but who are afraid of alienating themselves from other pet owners who have less aggressive canines.

Dog breeders and owners describe this canine-canine war as dog aggression, which is technically a dog’s intent to do harm to another dog. Dog snap at other dogs is only one display of aggression, and it comes in the category of loud barking and growling at other dogs. Dogs show aggression not so much because they want to hurt another dog, but because they are defending themselves from potential harm. Such defense tactics are undertaken by dogs to gain a higher status over a potential rival, or simply because of built in instincts or traits that make them feel that they are dominant versus other dogs. Some dogs may also develop hormonal imbalance, prompting them to exercise dominance over other dogs by showing dog aggression.

Aggression is common, although some breeds such as bulls and terriers are more likely to display aggression as they age. If a dog starts off life as an abused or attacked pup, then he may be fearful of other dogs and thus exercise defense-based aggression or snap at other dogs. In particular, dogs can be aggressive toward dogs or objects that resemble anything that threatened or attacked them in the past. If your dog snap at other dogs, therefore, may simply be a sign that your dog is defending his or her territory, or is remembering something in his or her past.

If your dog continues to snap at other dogs, then you might want to take a look at the following tips to help you control your dog. If all else fails, take your dog to the vet or a canine behavior specialist for more information on how he or she can be made less aggressive or harmful.

- When dogs lack exercise, they can have a lot of pent up energy, and can actually be more emotionally and mentally unstable. Take your dog out often and make him or her exercise by jogging together, or by playing fetch in the park. This can allow your dog to use up all the energy that he or she has, giving him or her less time and resources to snap at other dogs.

- If you have a puppy, discipline him or her and start him or her on a disciplined life without abusing him or her. A well-disciplined dog is less likely to do harm, and certainly less likely to snap at other dogs.

- If you prefer a dog that is docile and quiet, then you might want to select a breed beforehand that is not prone to snap at other dogs or other forms of dog aggression. Choose toy dogs or retrievers if you have little time to undertake any disciplinary measures. If you are an experienced breeder or trainer, however, then go for terriers and bulls, but be sure to instill discipline early.

- Act as a dominant owner. If a dog senses that he or she is dominant in your house, or the seeming owner of it, then it can turn itself into the alpha dog and establish itself as the leader of your pack. It can then think that it has the license to snap at other dogs and display aggression.

- As much as possible, keep only one dog at home. The more dogs you have, the more defensive your dog will become, and the more likely he or she is to display aggressive behavior or snap at other dogs.

If you really want to stop your dog to snap at other dogs at the shortest possible time, you need a dog obedience training to help you transform you dog’s behavior problems.

We now are aware that a lot of your pup’s learning is when they are very young and the time from when they are a few weeks old to five or six months old is very important in your puppies learning. This is when your dog will learn much of what will influence their adult behavior in their later life. So in truth, the earlier we start to teach our new puppies and teach them how we would like them to behave – the better life will be for everyone.

One of the great advantages of owning a dog as a pet, and why they are so successful is that they can learn to not mess in the house. As house training is often one of the first tasks to be done when you first get your pup you will want to be successful so you home doesn’t get into a mess.

So that you have a good basis for your puppy – you must be easy to understand as well as being consistent and clear. Be careful as his learning ability could be affected later on if he senses that you are unpredictable and not confident with him.

Go with your pup if your puppy seems like he is going outside to empty himself – he may forget what he needs to do.

After he goes to do his mess, always give hime fuss and give him a treat too. Do remember to give him his treat as soon as its possible so his knows that he has done something good – don’t wait until you are both back in the house.

If he does not empty himself then hang around for about five or six minutes and do not distract him. It is best to try and establish a favorite location in your yard for him to empty himself and allow him a reasonable time to do it – else come back inside. When it does look like your pup needs to go then watch him as you do not want him to make a mess in the house. It is important that he learns the correct behavior but by making an error, your pup is learning the wrong habit.

Ok, so your toddlers don’t listen to anything that you have to say and you feel that you have no control whatsoever because they always challenge you. Although you would like to take control over the situation, at times you feel disrespected, tired of yelling at them and feel weak as parents for not knowing how to handle these behavior problems in your toddlers.

How Can I Get My Toddlers to Listen?

Well, being parents is not the easiest job on the planet and it certainly did not come with any set of instructions but there are ways to get your toddlers to listen to you by just learning a few techniques and one of them is called the illusion of choice so Let’s jump right into it.

Pretend that your son Jason is really engrossed in a toy that he’s playing with but it is now time for dinner. Your task is to get him to the table without a fight and the best way to approach this is to begin by entering his world. You want to go beside him and ask a few interested questions about this particular toy. Once you have a conversation going, you have successfully entered his world. What do you do next?

The next step is use the following techniques called “double bind” it works by creating the illusion of choice. Giving your toddlers a choice is highly effective and keeping the choices limited makes it even more effective. The trick is to give just two or three variant choices at most to have the same basic outcome so there really is no choice.

After entering Jason’s world while playing with his toy, you can say something like: “Jason, this is a great toy that you’re playing with, I would love to play it with you after I clean up for dinner. Do you want to help me put dinner on your plate or would you like to help me pour a glass of milk instead? Whichever choice he chooses, the outcome will be the same because the main point is to pull him away from his toys and joining you for dinner. Those two proven techniques are highly effective and can be used in any situation to get your toddlers to listen.

You may wonder what is the difference between an ordinary training of a dog and training for a better behavior. Means of training a dog accustomed to come to you when you call, when to sit down and tell you like.

The training for better behavior consists in bad habits that you have your dog. Can follow the mailman every time he brings correspondence… or bite anyone who tries to comfort him … or perhaps you barking all night and you and you and your neighbors awake. All these are problems that your dog may have and which can be “treated” by a specialized training.

How to make your dog not to bark excessively? With this problem facing most of the masters of dogs. There is always a reason why a dog barking but some barking excessively because they realize that it bothers their masters. Your dog may think that it is okay to bark all day and night. He can do this because he noticed that call attention to. For example if you leave the dog alone and go as he starts to bark know that this way you will come back to him.

If you experience this problem you think your safe to go to a dog training school. There are but a cheaper solution: collar against barking. Collar will trigger a mild electric shock when it is activated. This shock is not pleasant for your dog, but when you understand that it is triggered only when he starts to bark and will not do so.

How do you convince his dog not to bite? Some dogs do not seem to realize that you hurt when you bite. When small they tend to bite and to chew everything they have at hand. If you do not usually lose in the first 6 months of life it might have problems later with the dog. To wean your dog from this habit will have to sit with him and give them a toy that is allowed to bite one. If you bite the hand or just try tell her firmly that not allowed and keep his mouth shut for a few seconds. You should do this several times a day until your dog will not bite.

If you have an older dog that has not yet learned that it is better to bite you can use the same method but must be careful. These dogs have better developed muscles and you may choose to serious injury. If it fails would be best to go your dog to a training school.

The “carrot-and-stick” approach to getting results from a sales channel–or paying for performance–is about as old as the practice of paying sales channel partners to represent you in the market.

According to John Henderson, President and CEO of Frank Lynn & Associates Inc., what often isn’t understood by channel partners (dealers, distributors) is that pay-for-performance is also about values–the values of the supplier (to increase margins, to be paid on time) and the expectations of the customer (100 percent satisfaction or one-stop shopping). Channel partners need to understand that they’re being compensated to help you increase margins, grow sales and satisfy end-user customers–not just to sell.

Smart Business talked to Henderson to learn more about this value/performance relationship.

Where should executive managers start in evaluating their sales channel pricing strategy?

Your channel pricing strategy and the individual elements of your channel pricing plan must first be weighed according to the likelihood that they can help you achieve your values and business goals, as well as the expectations of end-user customers.

If channel pricing is not aligned with values and business goals, chances are you’re missing opportunities to use channel compensation to more effectively motivate channel behavior and thereby achieve better financial results in the market.

Can and do all channel pricing programs influence dealer/distributor behavior?

Yes, and be careful what you ask for.

When you use a channel compensation plan to tell your channel partners what to do, chances are they’ll do it. And that includes changing their behavior–for good or for bad–to achieve the results you say you’re compensating them for.

For example, if you tell a channel partner to train all of his sales people on your product lines in order to receive a certain level of compensation, he’ll change his behavior and conduct the training. That’s because distributors are supportive of the concept of investing in capabilities that differentiate them from their competitors and thereby earn them differentiated pricing. It creates a win-win situation: you get more effective sales representation and your channel partner gets the differentiated pricing he wants.

Conversely, if you tell a channel partner he must achieve 15 percent growth in order to receive a certain level of compensation, he’ll change his behavior to do just that. But the change could be for the worse. The sales that are achieved might be at the expense of customer satisfaction, quality orders, receivables and returns. Often, the sales increase represents a shift in volume from one of your other distributors, resulting in flat sales to you, at a lower margin. In other words, the growth you pay the channel partner to generate might be completely contrary to your values and end-user customer expectations.

Are there common “pay-for-performance” practices that suppliers use to motivate channel partner behavior?

Suppliers use a number of incentives or penalties to encourage certain types of channel partner behavior like co-op advertising allowances and specification discounts. Of course, not using incentives or penalties can have the opposite effect by encouraging the channel partner to exhibit the opposite behavior.

Why do suppliers have trouble converting their channel partner discount structures to a “pay-for-performance” program?

First, unless specifically explained, channel partners often do not tie the discount received from the supplier to the activities the supplier has asked them to perform. When channel partners do not see the value in the activities, they focus on the costs of the activities.

Second, many suppliers do not differentiate the desired activities and the relative discount amounts associated with those activities. Channel partners that do perform the desired activities would like to be differentiated/rewarded for their support (versus those that do not perform the activities).

Third, many suppliers do not enforce the activity elements of their compensation systems by taking functional discounts away when they’re not earned. As a result, they pay for performance that is not earned and forfeit the corresponding margin dollars.

Does fine-tuning sales channel compensation help sustain long-term profitability and market share growth?

That’s correct. Carefully planned channel compensation systems do more than reward channel partners to sell. They also consider the values of the supplier and the expectations of the end-user, and they reward channel partners for helping achieve those goals.

In addition, channel compensation systems enforce the activities for which the channels are being compensated by having a mechanism in place to prevent margin dollars from being paid to channel partners that do not earn them.

For many years, the study of ethics was left to the philosophers. Business people did not see the need and thus practiced “business as usual. There are three reasons why the insurance professional should study ethics:

- Penalties for unethical behavior.

- Ethics for an understanding of business.

- Price of a tarnished reputation.

Penalties for Unethical Behavior

First and foremost, any unethical behavior that is discovered will probably cost far more than any potential gain.

Ethical breaches end careers much more than any other reason. In the past few years, newspaper headlines have screamed of business malpractice in the insurance industry. Not many of these individuals, if any at all, still work in the industry. On an agency level, those agents who made it a practice to “fudge” and made material misstatements on applications, in order to make a commission, are probably no longer in the industry. These are severe penalties for such behavior; however such actions are not only unethical, but also illegal.

Ethics for Understanding Business

Successful insurance professionals understand that their personal ethics are transformed into a successful insurance career. They realize that although business and personal responsibilities can be separated physically, they never will be able to separate their code of ethics. There is no door which automatically admits them into reality at the end of a business day. The ethical code of behavior is part of them and transformed into daily activities, whether it is business or personal pursuits. Thus, it becomes obvious, that the study of ethics by the insurance professional is indeed important.

Since we are called upon to make value judgments every day, how we act, both in our business and personal lives, becomes paramount. A study of ethics enables us to become aware of our thought process and helps us to make sound and ethical decisions.

Price of a Tarnished Reputation

Not every ethical breach is subject to the public spotlight. In many cases, the individual involved keeps his/her job. What does occur is that a reputation is established which is a tarnished one at best! We all have known individuals who established stellar reputations in the business community. Unfortunately, we all know individuals that have questionable reputations and no matter what is ever said to diminish these tarnished reputations, a lingering doubt remains. Interestingly, the individual may not even realize that their behavior has been detected. However, career paths and promotions become blocked and mediocrity sets in. In summary, unethical behavior is a prescription for business disaster.
